Control Your Consumable Spending

By Shaun R Tillby

Many business owners are actively searching for ways to keep their business costs low so that they can try to maintain their profit margins. While there are plenty of ways to monitor and reduce costs within your regular business budget, many business owners overlook the smaller, consumable items like till rolls or ink ribbons.

Till rolls are, of course, necessary for any business that offers goods and services to the public. Unfortunately, businesses often spend more than necessary on till roll paper and related supplies, and since these are consumable items, the cost can begin to add up quickly. If you need to cut costs to increase the profitability of your business, choosing the right till roll paper can help you achieve this goal.

You should begin by comparing your current supplier's prices to those of competitors. Not all suppliers will be consistent in their pricing across every product line, so your comparisons should be based on the types of products you use the most. You can maximize your cost savings by being sure the supplier you choose offers the biggest advantages in cost across the products you're likely to buy most often.

Once you've chosen a supplier, you then should consider working out the total cost of using different types of till rolls. While the economy-grade paper in a single-ply may appear to be the cheapest option at first glance, you could possibly be spending more than you need to. For simple transactions where a single receipt is acceptable for the customer, then perhaps this option is the most obvious for you.

Some registers are also able to create duplicate copies. For any business that requires multiple copies of receipts then you should begin by comparing the cost of printing duplicates one after the other using single-ply paper. This might seem cheaper initially, but when you consider the extra costs of using the printer ink it's not always the cheapest option. Now work out the cost of buying double-ply paper and then factor in that you'll be using the printer ink less often as each receipt is duplicated as it's printed.

You may require a thermal till roll, which is the type used in most chip and pin machines. Other businesses may require impact action paper rolls. These are carbonless paper that might seem a little more expensive initially, but when you consider that you won't be buying ink printing ribbons they can end up saving you money in the long run.

With careful planning, it is possible to improve the profitability of your business by limiting the cost of consumable supplies. By taking stock of your needs for till roll paper and related supplies, and by carefully choosing a supplier that offers competitive pricing, you can save a significant amount of money in your day-to-day business operations. - 30544
