Novelty Restaurants Must Stand the Test of Time

By Jose L Riesco

What sets your food and drink business apart from the next one? Do you have a unique selling proposition to encourage people to actually try you out, or do you fall into that gray area? When you are starting out in this business you should certainly try and come up with some ideas for novelty restaurants, as some have been particularly successful using this approach.

If you have an idea in mind, do you think that it will be able to pass the test of time? Time is not something that is on your side when it comes to trying to establish a business, unfortunately as this is a very cutthroat environment. Base everything on a solid foundation and think it all through.

Many elements go into making up a successful novelty restaurant and you should try and integrate them together as much as possible. Try matching your atmosphere, location, architecture, entertainment, menu, staffing, decor and theme to come up with your overall picture.

If you can tie all the different parts of your business operation together when you're thinking of the concept for your novelty restaurant, all the better. However, be careful about going overboard and making something that could be seen as "cool" into something that people might say is "cheesy.".

Remember that the food and drink industry is all about people. As such, your staff are a very important element when it comes to theming. For example, you may need them to be able to sing as part of an entertainment-based approach to your novelty restaurant. You might require them to have a particularly extrovert character and really get into their particular role.

If you think that recruiting and training staff to operate in a particular role may be somewhat difficult, you might choose to develop a theme for your restaurant around your menu. Often static items take less upkeep and maintenance and you can develop your seating theme, atmospherics and decor accordingly.

Use the power of the Internet and do a lot of research to see what has worked and what hasn't. There's nothing to say that you cannot copy a successful idea from somewhere else.

You must make sure that the quality of your food is outstanding if you are trying to portray a particularly different style or theme. Remember that it is not all about the show, but mostly about the food. - 30544
